This is my first time in Madrid. What should I see?
If you have three or four days, you don’t need to see everything. In fact, Madrid is much more enjoyable when you leave some room for spontaneity.
There are a few places that, if this is your first visit, should be on your itinerary:
The Prado Museum and the Art Walk. Even if you’re not particularly fond of museums, it’s worth setting aside a few hours to explore one of the world’s greatest art collections.
Retiro Park. A must-see in October.
The Puerta de Alcalá and the Salamanca District. A perfect combination for a morning of strolling, shopping, and dining.
Gran Vía and the historic center. From Gran Vía, you can continue on to Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Madrid de los Austrias.
The Royal Palace and Plaza de Oriente. And, if you can, stay in this area until late afternoon.
But we’d also set aside time for something much less structured: simply strolling through Madrid with no specific destination in mind.
What if I’ve already been to the most popular tourist spots?
So October might be even more interesting.
You can discover small art galleries, pop into unique shops in the Salamanca neighborhood, stroll through the streets of Chamberí, have a coffee in Justicia, visit one of the city’s markets, or seek out that restaurant you’ve been saving for months for your next visit to Madrid.
It’s also a great time to check out the cultural calendar. Exhibitions, theater, musicals, concerts, and a variety of other events fill Madrid’s calendar throughout the fall.
In October 2026, the city will also host events such as Hispanidad 2026 at the beginning of the month and a new edition of Suma Flamenca, among other cultural offerings. Where to eat in Madrid in October?
This is where one of the greatest pleasures of the trip begins.
October lets you experience two sides of Madrid: the outdoor terraces when the sun comes out, and the cozy restaurants when the weather cools off in the evening.

Where can I enjoy fall in Madrid?
If there’s one place you can’t miss in October, it’s The Retiro park.
The trees begin to turn shades of yellow, ochre, and red, and places like the Crystal Palace, the Estanque Grande, and its wide promenades take on a completely different atmosphere.
